Black Power

First advanced as a political philosophy by Kwame Ture (aka Stokely Carmichael), Black Power expanded upon the goals of the African-American Civil Rights Movement. The Black Power Movement included a wide range of associated ideologies aimed at assertively securing racial dignity, self-sufficiency and freedom from oppression. A cultural movement as well, Black Power emphasized racial pride and advanced the creation of black political and cultural institutions.
